THE METHOD

Less hype.
More provenance.

Awesome REA helps you find open-source reverse-engineering projects, independent reimplementations and compatibility layers. REA usage is optional, not a requirement.

What “checked” means

We reviewed the linked primary sources on the date shown. We checked whether the published source supports the stated project scope, license note and any claimed REA involvement. We did not independently build, execute, benchmark or security-audit the listed software.

Project progress and test results are author-reported unless explicitly stated otherwise. “Checked” is a source-review date, not a freshness guarantee. Pinned GitHub links preserve the reviewed snapshot where practical; project links go to current repositories.

Different project relationships, not one blanket claim

Independent reimplementation
A separately implemented application or engine recreates documented formats, behavior or workflows. REA involvement is not required or implied; any clean-room claim remains the author's, not our legal certification.
Compatibility project
A compatibility layer or interpreter enables existing programs or data to work in another environment. It may still require original software, data or a license.
Upstream REA project
The original toolkit maintained at morluto/rea.
Author documents REA use
A primary project source explicitly describes how REA contributed. That credit applies only to the documented work, not automatically to every feature or prior release.
REA maintainer case study
The official REA site documents a specific investigation or reconstruction. A linked full project may be much broader than the demonstrated REA work.
REA tooling present
A repository contains explicit REA scripts or workflow documentation. This is a useful ecosystem connection, but is not proof that its whole product was built with REA.
REA integration / packaging
A plugin, skill, bridge or package explicitly integrates or distributes REA. This does not make it official or security-audited.
REA learning resource
A substantive guide, lab or resource list explicitly covers REA. Merely featuring REA is not proof of using it to build software.

Purpose, type and status are separate

Purpose groups describe what an entry is for: developer and security tools; games and engines; desktop and productivity; audio and hardware; integrations and packaging; or learning and resources. Empty groups stay hidden.

Type describes what you get: an analysis tool, reconstruction, interoperability project, integration, case study or learning resource. The status and limitations describe maturity separately. A game reconstruction with REA tooling present is not relabeled as a verified REA-built game.

The README directory and website are generated from one shared catalog and reviewed translations. Correct the source and translations together; regenerate both language versions.

Shared catalog

What belongs here?

Open-source reverse-engineering projects, independent reimplementations and compatibility tools qualify without using REA. We also include relevant tools, integrations and public learning resources. Software needs an applicable open-source license and primary evidence of its stated scope. Early and alpha work is welcome with honest limits.

Inclusion is not a full-replacement claim. That stronger claim would need a documented usable build and enough supported functionality for the particular workflow. Required original software, assets and hardware must be disclosed. We do not convert author-reported menu coverage or benchmarks into independent verification.

We exclude unexplained mirrors, download promotions, generic alternatives without evidence of the claimed reconstruction or compatibility scope, and entries we cannot describe accurately. Restrictive source-available terms are not automatically open source. This directory is curated, not an exhaustive inventory.

Rights, licenses and responsible use

Listing a project is not legal review or endorsement. Reverse-engineering, interoperability and redistribution rules vary by jurisdiction, license agreement and terms of service. A repository's license may cover only its authors' own code — not the original software, trademarks, assets or data.

REA's MIT license covers REA itself, not everything analyzed with it. Use only targets you are authorized to inspect. We do not host third-party binaries, game assets, proprietary code or instructions to bypass access controls. Descriptions of “clean-room” work remain the projects' claims, not a legal certification by this index.

License labels summarize the reviewed notices. Per-file and third-party terms may differ. Follow the source license link before reuse. This is not legal advice.

Suggestions, corrections & removal

This index is maintained by Jeff Xun. Submit a project suggestion, correction / removal request, or website bug report. The forms accept English or Chinese. Experienced contributors can submit a PR following the contribution guide.

Provide primary evidence, the applicable license, current limitations and any affiliation. Maintainers review a submission before merging data changes; neither an Issue nor a passing automated check publishes it. We do not automatically run submitted software. GitHub Issues are public: never submit credentials, private binaries or proprietary investigation data. For a sensitive removal request, contact the maintainer through their public GitHub profile instead.

Privacy & independence

This static site has no accounts, ads, third-party fonts or embedded media. Search and filtering stay in your browser; search terms are not sent to us. Optional Google Analytics 4 loads only after you allow statistics on awesomerea.com. It measures page visits and basic device information using cookies; page queries and fragments are excluded, and external referrers are limited to their origin. Advertising signals and enhanced measurement are disabled. Browser Do Not Track and Global Privacy Control signals prevent collection. Your allow/decline choice is stored locally for up to 180 days; analytics cookies expire within 180 days. The footer settings let you decline or withdraw without interrupting browsing. Withdrawal stops further collection and clears this integration's GA cookies, but cannot recall requests already sent or delete historical data. No statistics run on local or preview sites, and language preference is not stored.

Cloudflare serves the site and may process request information for delivery and security. Outbound links and GitHub Issues use the destination service's privacy rules; Issue submissions are public. We do not control those services.
